Goddess
-Ve Tamilazagan
Sudha got stunned! Jayaram took the money out of his pocket and again put it back into it.
It was customary for them to go to the temple of Kandasamy on the first day of every Pongal. This custom was there from the days of the elders. New dress, turmeric, sugarcane, etc. would be placed on a plate.
After completing the worship, Sudha said, ‘Now we’re going to do one thing.’
‘What is that, mummy?’ children asked anxiously.
‘The money we have been saving we’d put it in the hundi now.’ She untied the knot of the yellow cloth; took out the money; and put it in the hundi.
After this, Uma and Maheshwar also put their money in the hundi. Now it was the turn of Jayaram. He put his hand into his pocket, took out three hundred rupee currency notes, and then put them back into his pocket.
Sudha was taken by surprise. ‘What has happened to you? We’ve to make our offering to God. You’re making a mistake’.
‘I have it for my Goddess....... the Goddess who took care of us and brought us to this stage. If I don’t buy a sari even once in a year for her, would it not be a sin? We should serve her when she is alive. What is the use of giving money in charity after her death?’ Jayaram asked.
Sudha once again raised her hands to worship the swami.
